Area volunteer fire departments responded on the morning of May 16 to a structure fire at Duck’s Mobile Home Park in Windsor that led to the destruction of a trailer, but no lives were lost and no injuries resulted from the incident.

Windsor Volunteer Fire Department Public Information Officer Walter Bernacki said the WVFD was dispatched at about 5:49 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, to 9390 Dinky Circle for a reported structure fire.

He said that Windsor Medic 70 arrived on scene first and confirmed it was a working structure fire in a single-wide trailer at the specified address, with flames and smoke showing from one side of the structure.

“Firefighters went interior to the structure and were able to make an aggressive attack and extinguish the fire,” Bernacki said. 

He estimated that first responders from WVFD and Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department had the fire out within about 10 minutes of their arrival.

“Unfortunately, the trailer had already sustained some substantial fire and smoke damage, and obviously from the extinguishment, there was some water damage,” he said.

He noted that a primary search was conducted, and no people were found inside the structure.

“We did find out that the (resident) was at work at the time, so he was not home, which verified our primary search,” he said.

Bernacki added that no firefighters were injured in the course of their response to the fire.

Berdie Duck, who runs Duck’s Mobile Home Park LLC, said she was thankful no one was hurt in the fire.

“We can put another trailer there, but we’re not going to put one,” she said. “We’re going to rent a lot there now.”

She said that the man who was living in the trailer has an alternative place to live.

Duck also said she spoke with an investigator regarding the cause of the fire.

“They said it’s no foul play or anything, so they’re just ruling it accidental,” she said.
