GOLF
The Isle of Wight Academy golf team defeated Broadwater Academy 172-208 Wednesday, April 26, at Cypress Creek Golf Club.
Junior Sawyer Conrad was medalist with a 40, and his brother Spencer was second with a 41.
The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship will be held May 15 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond. The second annual nine-hole Girl’s Invitational will be held at Meadowbrook on May 10.
BASEBALL
IWA’s varsity baseball team fell to 10-5 after two losses: 11-1 Thursday, April 27, at Greenbrier Christian Academy and 4-3 April 24 at Windsor High School.
The Chargers trailed the Gators 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but four Greenbrier hits doomed the IWA bid to avoid the 10-run rule as the home team tallied four times to end the game.
Matters were somewhat tighter April 24 versus IWA’s Courthouse Highway rivals from Windsor.
Trailing 4-1 going in the top of the sixth, IWA’s Ashton Rogers reached base on an error to lead off the frame and later scored on an errant throw by the Dukes defense.
With two outs on the board for IWA, Jason Chapman was hit by a pitch and took second, then third by way of stolen bases. He later scored on an error by the third baseman to make the score 4-3. One pitch later, an IWA batter struck out to end the rally.
When two outs were on the board, the Windsor pitcher plunked Alex Holt, who constituted the tying run on first base. He would be stranded, through, when the ensuing batter grounded out to second.
The Chargers are tied with North Cross School for seventh place in the VISAA Division II state private school baseball poll going into the final week of the regular season. Ahead of them is No. 5 Atlantic Shores Christian School, IWA’s Wednesday, May 3, opponent.
Division II tournament play is set to begin May 15 with an eight-seed/nine-seed play-in game. The first round will be May 16, with semifinals May 19 at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, and the final will be May 20.
SOFTBALL
The IWA softball team dropped to 5-7 with a 6-5 loss April 24 at Windsor and a 3-1 loss Friday at Greenbrier.
The Lady Chargers are ranked fourth in VISAA Division II. The top eight teams in each division will make the state tournament. Quarterfinals will be May 16 at the home fields of the top four squads. Semifinals and the final will be May 18 and 19, respectively, at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.
