Residents in the town of Windsor will have two special opportunities in April to clean out the junk in their attics or garages, trim their trees and/or get rid of items cluttering their yards.

The town is offering special residential trash pickups on Saturday, April 1, and Saturday, April 15.

Town Manager William Saunders shared details on these two spring cleanup days with Windsor Town Council members during the council’s March 14 meeting, starting with a review of how these opportunities came about.

“At your Feb. 7 meeting, you voted to use the Refuse Control and Recycling Grant funds to initiate special residential refuse pickups this spring,” he said.

In prior years, Windsor has received $1,200 from the litter control grant, but Saunders noted in a Feb. 7 staff report that this fiscal year, the town has been awarded $2,463.

“So council voted to spend the funds on having a spring cleanup day, where the refuse company would do an extra pickup of household items left at the curb,” he said.

In a March 14 staff report and during the council’s March 14 meeting, Saunders explained that due to the transfer station being open only until noon on Saturdays, two pickup dates will be required to cover the town.

“The routes have been separated by water billing areas so that informational fliers could be included with the March and April water bills,” he said.

He noted that those who receive a water bill in March will participate in the pickup on April 1, and those who receive a water bill in April will participate in the April 15 pickup.

These pickups are only for residential addresses that are currently serviced by Bay Disposal, he stated. Businesses, or residences that are served by dumpsters, do not qualify.

“Each (flier) for each (cleanup) date includes the streets that are being picked up on that date,” he said. “These fliers also have all the prohibited items and information about how to bundle up your yard debris and whatnot.”

INFORMATION FOR APRIL 1 PICKUP

The April 1 flier notes that the April 1 cleanup includes the following streets: B Avenue, Bank Street, Bear Trap Circle, Blackwater Road, Butler Avenue, Church Street, Community Drive, Court Street, Courthouse Highway, Curve Drive, Duke Street, Essie Doris Lane, Griffin Street, Holland Drive, Holland Lane, Johnson Avenue, Joyner Avenue, Joyner Town Lane, Kello’s Lane, Maple Lane, Mulberry Lane, Norfolk & Western Street, Old Suffolk Road, Pierce Circle, Pine Lane, Randolph Drive, Roberts Avenue, Shiloh Drive, Taylor Avenue, Tyler Drive, Virginia Avenue, Walters Highway, Watson Street, Willie Roberts Road and Windsor Boulevard.

Yard debris must be 3 inches in diameter or less, and 4 feet long or less, and it must be bundled, the flier states, adding that leaves or other yard trimmings must be bagged.  

The town explains in the flier that residents on the streets listed above must place all items to be discarded at the street by 7 a.m. on April 1.

“Our contractor will not enter your driveway or yard to get heavy items, such as appliances,” town officials stated. “Nothing will be picked up after 11 a.m. as the landfill closes at noon.”

The flier then lists the items that the contractor will not pick up: Structural debris such as lumber, roofing, siding, tires, paints, batteries, gas cylinders, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil, refrigerants, asbestos, animal carcasses and hazardous materials.  

Household hazardous waste can be disposed of for free at Isle of Wight refuse and recycling centers or the Isle of Wight Transfer Station at 13191 Foursquare Road in Smithfield. The flier also adds that those seeking further information about this can call 757-961-3874.

INFORMATION FOR APRIL 15 PICKUP

The flier for the April 15 pickup features the same information listed above from the April 1 pickup flier except for the different date and the different streets being impacted.

The April 15 flier notes that the April 15 cleanup includes the following streets: Albert Court, Andrew Court, Bass Street, Beale Street, Belmont Street, Bream Street, Castle Street, Catfish Street, Deer Path Road, Edwards Lane, Hazel Road, Hazelwood Drive, Hidden Acres Circle, John Henry Street, Keaton Avenue, Kelsie Street, Lena Rose Street, Liberty Avenue, Lovers Lane, Marlette Street, Marvin Court, Mathews Drive, Norris Street, Oakwood Lane, Perch Street, Robinson Way, Rolfe Avenue, Sarahnell Lane, Savannah Street, Speckle Street, Sylvia Circle, Twin Circle, Weaver Court, Willis Court, Windsor Way, Wythe Drive and York Court.
