The Isle of Wight County Museum hosted a 121st birthday celebration for the town of Windsor on Wednesday, March 15, at the Windsor Town Center.
The town was founded on March 15, 1902, and the county museum gave those attending Wednesday’s celebration a brief overview of Windsor’s history.
“We host this event annually and love the opportunity to highlight Windsor’s history,” Museum Director Jennifer England said. “There are a number of interesting artifacts in our collection which showcase the town’s railroading past, as well as its growth from 1902 to the present. We love wishing Windsor a happy birthday and many more to come.”
Windsor Mayor George Stubbs was among the local officials at the celebration, along with Windsor Town councilmen Edwards “Gibbie” Dowdy, Jake Redd and Marlin W. Sharp.
“We had a very good turnout of town residents that were there,” Stubbs said.
He noted that Albert Burckard put on a short presentation about the railroad and the part that it played in building the town.
Among the Windsor artifacts that the museum brought to the event were a section of rail, yearbooks, photos, drawings and more.
“They had a little video presentation of Norfolk Western, which is now Norfolk Southern,” Stubbs said.
Of the museum’s overall presentation, he added, “It was pretty interesting, and from all the comments I heard, I think everybody enjoyed it, and I appreciated (the museum) doing it quite a bit.”
Sharp said, “As a member of Windsor Town Council, it was an honor to help celebrate the town of Windsor’s 121st birthday at the Windsor Town Center. I am grateful to the Isle of Wight County Museum for providing this opportunity to appreciate the history of our town and to enjoy our community connections.”
Redd said he loved learning about the history of the town.
“The presentation put on by the Isle of Wight County Museum was great, and we even sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the town,” he said.
Stubbs said, “Then we had a birthday cake. Jennifer said, ‘We’ve got to have someone with a birthday cap on.’ I said, ‘Well, I guess I’m it.’”
