The Isle of Wight Academy varsity baseball team’s pitching limited Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School to four hits March 15, defeating the Knights in the Chargers’ first road game of the season, 13-3.

Trent Holland was 4-for-4 with two runs and a run batted in for IWA; Kody Kosiorek was 2-for-4 with a run, and he drove in a pair; Jake Lineberry was 3-for-4, scoring twice.

The Chargers also defeated their toughest competition thus far with a five-inning, 18-5 defeat of Hampton Roads Academy on March 14.

Isle of Wight’s Trevor Mason was 3-for-3 and scored four times with a triple and three RBIs. He also pitched three innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs and walking four and striking out three.

James Thompson was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs; Jackson Cofer was 2-for-3, with two runs and four RBIs; and Jacob Chapman went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Mason leads the team in batting at .800, and he has an on-base percentage of .833. Cofer is second at .714, and Payton Shipman is third at .667.

The Chargers, now 4-0, jumped out to a 2-0 start to the new season with wins over Southampton and Tidewater academies.

The Chargers defeated Southampton 12-2 on March 11.

Mason was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a solo home run in the third inning. Shipman was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Cofer was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

IWA gave up three runs in the first inning to Tidewater Academy, but four Charger hurlers combined to hold the Warriors hitless over the next four frames, as IWA routed Tidewater 14-3 in five innings March 8.

James Thompson, Mark Thompson, Lineberry and Ashton Rogers combined to hurl four scoreless innings, walking three and striking out eight.

Holland was 3-for-3 with three runs and three runs batted in for IWA. Mason went 3-for-4 with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Shipman went 3-for-3, scored a run and drove in another for Isle of Wight.

The IWA softball team bolted out to a 2-1 record on the young season, defeating Southampton Academy and Fredericksburg Christian School before falling to Hickory High School 1-0 on March 16.

The IWA girls basketball team finished a successful season with a defeat to Covenant School, 56-24, on March 1.

Covenant went on to the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state championship game, losing to state champ Miller School of Albemarle 62-29 at Benedictine College Preparatory on March 5.

Versus Covenant, the Lady Chargers’ leading scorer, senior Lily Williams, was held to three points.

IWA is on spring break from March 21-25.
