Although Isle of Wight County schools are closed for at least the next two weeks, a plan is in place so that students needing meals can still get breakfast and lunch during that time via the school system.

Lynn Briggs, spokeswoman for the division, announced that starting today, March 16, and continuing through Friday, March 27, meals will be available to all students without charge, at locations listed below.

“To maintain the safety guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), meals will be provided using a drive-by/pickup model. They will be bagged and include both a breakfast and lunch,” stated Briggs in a press release. “Should pickup dates or sites be changed, you will be notified via Connect 5, on our website and through our official social media channels.”

She stated that the meals will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday in Georgie D. Tyler Middle School, Carrsville Elementary School and Smithfield High School.

Further, school buses will deliver meals to the following areas throughout the county daily, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the southern parts of the county:

• Camptown Park

• Twin Ponds Mobile Community

• Clydesdale Mobile Community

• Georgie Tyler Apartments

• Zuni Citgo

• Windsor Community Center

Related to the closing, Briggs provided these details about students notebooks, etc., and the status of the school calendar.

Picking up Student Materials from School

Schools will be open today for staff to prepare for the extended closure. If you need to pick up student notebooks, books, or other personal items belonging to your child, please arrange to do so today. After Monday, school buildings will be closed to students and families through March 27 or until further notice. Medication should also be picked up Monday that will be needed at home during the school closure period.

Parents should consider that the reopening of schools could be extended beyond the minimum 14 days ordered by the governor, based on the status of COVID-19 in our community. Should you need to collect materials or medication after Monday, please email your school principal to arrange for this.

School Calendar/Spring Break

At this time, no decisions have been made about the nine weeks marking period or SOL testing. Information will be communicated as it becomes available. No decision has been made to change Spring Break at this time. We will keep you updated on any changes in the school calendar.
