ISLE OF WIGHT

Colby Williams rushed for 153 yards and backfield mate Zach Stroud, for 134, as Isle of Wight Academy defeated Broadwater Academy 62-16 here on Oct. 4.

Williams scored two touchdowns rushing; Stroud scored once on the ground and again on an interception return.

The Chargers’ defense limited the Vikings to 150 yards of total offense. Broadwater quarterback Brant Bloxom was 8-for-22 passing with 2 interceptions and only 83 yards.

The IWA defense was on-point. Odin Bristol had 11 tackles to lead the team; fellow defenders Trent Holland and Colby Williams each had seven tackles.

Isle of Wight scored the game’s first 14 points to get out ahead of Broadwater. A 14-play, 61-yard drive, largely powered by Stroud, was capped by a 1-yard plunge by Williams. Jacob Chapman’s extra point, the first of 8 on the day, made it 7-0 with 4:41 to play in the first quarter.

A short Vikings possession ended in a punt, giving IWA the ball at its own 45. Three plays later, Junior Seth Baker ran it in from 20 yards away; Chapman’s PAT made it 14-0.

The ensuing kickoff was returned into IWA territory, setting the stage for a 28-yard run by Broadwater running back Gunnar Gustafson. A 2-point conversion got the visiting Vikings on the board, 14-8.

IWA wasted no time in retaliating. Williams’ 45-yard rush and ensuing PAT made it 21-8 with 28 seconds left in the quarter.

IWA defensive back J.T. Taylor began IWA’s next possession by picking off a Bloxom pass with 24 seconds left that gave the Chargers a first down at the Broadwater 10. On the second play from scrimmage, Stroud dashed into the end zone from 3 yards out and the score stood 28-8.

Bristol later caught a 10-yard scoring strike from IWA quarterback Cade White. Not to be outdone, the invading Viking horde polished off their ensuing drive with a 22-yard flea-flicker pass from Gustafson to Bloxom. The conversion made it 34-16 with 5:38 to play in the first half.

Bristol’s 9-yard reception of another White pass made it 41-16 with seconds to go before intermission.

IWA’s first offensive plays in the second half were capped by a 30-yard run by Baker to make it 48-16. Seconds later, Isle of Wight scored again when Stroud intercepted

Bloxom and returned the ball 30 yards for another score. IWA led by a score of 55-16 with 10:00 left in the quarter, starting a running clock for the game’s remainder by state rule.

IWA later intercepted Bloxom again, with Trent Holland behind the crime. The Chargers would not score again until the fourth quarter, when Jabari Thomas hauled in a 36-yard strike from White to make the score 62-16.

The Chargers are ranked fifth in the most recent Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Div. II poll. Atlantic Shores and Christchurch are tied for third place. The top four teams in the division quality for state playoffs. Broadwater was ranked fifth in VISAA’s smaller school division.

IWA squares off against the Seahorses in two weeks when they travel to Virginia’s Northern Neck region. Isle of Wight hosts Norfolk Christian at 7 p.m. Friday at William M. Hooper Field in the team’s regular-season home finale.

Volleyball

Only two weeks remain in the regular season, leading to the 2019 Metro Conference tournaments.

The Metro Conference JJV girls’ volleyball tournament (top four teams in the conference) is Saturday, Oct. 19, at Isle of Wight Academy.

The Metro Conference JV girls’ volleyball tournament (top four teams) is on Monday, Oct. 21, at StoneBridge School.

The Metro Conference Varsity girls' volleyball tournament (all eight teams) begins with

quarterfinal matches to be played Thursday, Oct. 24, at Hampton Christian. The semifinals and championship match of the Metro Conference Varsity girls’ volleyball tournament will be played Saturday, Oct. 26, again at Hampton Christian. The IWA varsity team is 9-4, 6-3 in the Metro Conference.

Cross Country

The IWA JV girls’ cross country team claimed first place in the Airfield Cross Country

Invitation in Wakefield on Oct. 5.

The Charger quartet of Lauren Maust, Hannah Edward, Addison Winslow and Hannah

McClain took the top four individual slots. IWA’s Brett Landen took second place in the

JV boys race at Wakefield.

IWA finished fourth in the girls varsity race, and Jack Powell, seventh, in the varsity boys

race.

The team runs again at Southampton Academy on Thursday, Oct. 10.

The Metro Conference cross country championship races will be run on Monday, Oct.
