Windsor-area Isle of Wight Achievers recognized at the county’s School Board meeting in May included the Windsor High School forensics team and Olivia Barnett, a student at Georgie D. Tyler Middle School.
The WHS forensics team recently competed at the state level after taking home the regional championship. At the state championship, the team finished fourth in State Class One out of 18 teams. Individual students who received regional awards were:
- Ja’Veon Newby: Second Place Regionals – Serious Duo (with Keionte Wellons)
- Alexander Carter: Third Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Serious
- Caitlyn Carter: Third Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Poetry
- Natalie Spain: Third Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Storytelling
- Rylan Farey: Second Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous
- Kaleb Brunner: Second Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous Duo (with Sam Carlson)
- Sam Carlson: Second Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous Duo (with Kaleb Bruner)
- Keionte Wellons: Second Place Regionals – Serious Duo (with Ja’Veon Newby)
- Kaitlin Pippins: First Place Super Regionals, Second Place Regionals – Serious
- Asia Jackson: First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Prose
- Erubey Mendiola: First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Storytelling
Those who received state awards were:
- Ashley Burns: Third Place State, Second Place Super Regionals, First Place Regionals – Original Oratory
- Leah Carroll: Third Place State, Second Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Prose
- Ta’Mya Reese: Third Place State, First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous
- Anthony Houston: Second Place State, First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous Duo (with Gunther Perkins)
- Najuan Mozell: Second Place State, First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Poetry
- Gunther Perkins: Second Place State, First Place Super Regionals and Regionals – Humorous Duo (with Anthony Houston)
The team is coached by Virginia Beatty Riffle, who was named the 1A Regional Coach of the Year.
Barnett recently received a plaque and $375 for winning the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Patriot Pen Essa Contest at the local level. The theme of her essay was, “Why I honor the American flag.”
The WHS senior of the month for May was Cierra White, who has served as the WHS School Board liaison for the past two school years.
“Cierra has a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. Her integrity is unchallenged, while her sense of purpose is keen. She has sought opportunities to shine like a star as she pursued her dream of college. Her numerous college admissions is a testimony to her hard work and dedication,” Luann Scott, one of White’s teachers, said of her.
White will attend Longwood University in the fall, where she plans to study history.
