Russ Wells had 19 points as Isle of Wight Academy beat Broadwater 62-47 here on Friday night.

Teammate William Fricke had 13 points. The Vikings were paced by Ahmad Scarborough’s 21 points; Clay Wardius added 12.

Broadwater’s home court has traditionally been an eventful road trip for the Chargers, and Friday’s game proved to be much the same. IWA trailed the Vikings 17-11 following a 9-0 Broadwater run in the first quarter, which they lost to their hosts, 19-15.

But IWA reclaimed an edge in the second quarter when Wells scored to make it 22-21 with 2:25 left before halftime. On the strength of a 7-2 run of their own, the Chargers (10-8, 4-2 Metro) took a 28-24 lead into intermission.

The visitors opened the third quarter with seven consecutive points to make their lead 35-21. Broadwater got as close as five points when Brant Bloxom’s field goal made it 44-39 with 6:22 left in the third.

But IWA bounced back with the next eight points and 12 of the next 16 points to take a 55-43 lead with less than a minute remaining

Worthy continues his assault on the Metro Athletic Conference scoring title. He is averaging 16.7 points per game, according to the most recent Metro statistics, trailing Williamsburg Christian’s Dexter Radcliffe and his 24 points per contest average. The IWA junior is a point per game ahead of StoneBridge’s Noah Fesl.

The Chargers were scheduled to return to action on Tuesday against Williamsburg Christian in Jester Gymnasium and Friday at StoneBridge. Varsity contests begin at 7 p.m.
