Paul D. Camp Community College Hurricanes softball and baseball teams are gearing up for a special fundraising event that will be held in the new year. The 2019 First Pitch Banquet is set for Sunday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the college’s Regional Workforce Development Center, 100 North College Drive, Franklin.
“Sports is a lot more involved than just being competitive and playing some games,” said PDCCC Athletic Director and Baseball Head Coach David Mitchell. “We volunteer in the community and raise money to support our program, which gives team members another source of pride. In addition, activities like this provide experiences and skills that will last them a lifetime.”
The event features NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler and former NFL player Greg Scott. Sadler was born in Emporia and has numerous achievements and awards under his belt, including the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Most Popular Driver, 2016-2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series Most Popular Driver and the 2017 NASCAR Xfinity Series regular season champion. He ran in nearly 440 races over a 16-year period during the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
Scott, a graduate of Southampton High School, played college football at Hampton University and was drafted in the 2002 NFL Draft. He played for the Washington Redskins and the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as Rhein Fire (NFLE) and Grand Rapids Rampage (AFL.) He is founder and CEO of the Franklin-based non-profit Cover 3 Foundation, which has provided healthy meals and snacks to area children since 2009.
Coaches and players will be on hand at the banquet, which will include a barbecue dinner catered by Nothin’ Butt Fun and a cash bar. Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple and may be purchased from any baseball or softball player. Checks may be made payable to the PDCCC Foundation. If mailing, please send to: Paul D. Camp Community College, Attention: Dr. Renee Felts, 100 N College Drive, Franklin, VA 23851.
