Gwendolyn Hope Baker, born March 15, 1942, and passed away on Oct. 24, 2024. A loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and cousin. She was fiercely protective of her inner circle, accommodating, obliging, cooperative albeit stubborn at times, helpful, generous, humorous and friendly. Proud to be a sister and grandmother, she loved her children dearly and always wanted the absolute best for them, even when she couldn’t provide it herself.
Gwendolyn grew up in North Carolina before later moving to Virginia. As a child, she had a passion for horseback riding. Despite a tumultuous home life, she was a happy child, always looking over the rainbow for brighter days.
Gwendolyn married young, her first marriage to Robert Rudolph producing two sons: Robert Page (Pete Allen Rudolph) and Billy Rudolph. This marriage ended just before her daughter Rhonda Glass (Barbara Arleen Rudolph) was born. The struggle of being a single mother weighed heavily on her, leading to the most painful decision of her life: ultimately giving her children up for adoption. She later found love again in Norfolk, Virginia, marrying Sgt. William Jackson Baker. After his passing in 1997, she moved to Windsor, Virginia, to be with her mother Mary White and her eldest sister, Mary Ellen Clifton. Gwendolyn had two younger sisters, Constance (Connie) Welt and Lillian Lynn White and a younger brother, Albert White and his wife, Majel. She was a loving grandmother to Jennifer Benson and an adoring aunt to three nieces: Fay, Marie and Robin and five nephews: Gene, Phil, Cliff, Norman, Stuart and Christopher. Gwendolyn was also a second-degree aunt to her three nieces: Jade, Rochelle and Elizabeth and four nephews: Charles, Brandon, Zachary and Kenneth. Her third-degree nieces and nephews were cherished as if they were her great-grandchildren.
Gwendolyn had a passion for nurturing her garden, often found with her hands in the soil planting vibrant flowers and hearty vegetables. She was an avid reader, losing herself in the pages of mystery novels and classic literature. Gwendolyn also enjoyed watching sports, especially rooting for the Dallas Cowboys, listening to Elvis, playing Bingo or Gin Rummy and spending time with her loved ones. Her love for animals was evident in the way she cared for her pets, especially her beloved dogs Ladybug and Suzie. Her laughter was infectious, particularly when she shared a joke or story with friends and family.
Gwendolyn’s life was defined by her unwavering love and commitment to her family. Her kindness, humor and tenacity left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. She will be remembered for her generous spirit and the warmth she brought into the lives of her loved ones.
A memorial service for Gwendolyn Hope Baker will be held at Windsor Congregational Christian Church on March 15, 2025. Further details will be provided in a memorial service announcement sent out in early February. For more information, please email her granddaughter at JBBakerGwenPOA@gmail.com.
