The Fire Towner Road bridge over Pope Swamp, located 2 miles west of Windsor Elementary, reopened to traffic on June 12 after Virginia Department of Transportation crews finished the bridge replacement ahead of schedule.

The work on Fire Tower Road, also known as Route 644, included demolition of the previous bridge and construction of a new two-lane, single-span, multi-beam bridge.

The project, originally scheduled for completion this summer, finished more than a month ahead of schedule. Bryant Structures Inc. began construction on the $1.79 million project in October of last year.
