According to a June 13 release from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a portion of Route 644 (Fire Tower Road) was opened to traffic on June 12 following the early completion of a VDOT’s project to replace the bridge over Pope Swamp in Isle of Wight County.

The work on Route 644 included the demolition of the previous bridge and the construction of a new two-lane, single-span, multi-beam bridge. The project, originally scheduled for completion in summer 2024, finished more than a month ahead of schedule. Bryant Structures, Inc. began construction on the $1.79 million project in October 2023.
