Isle of Wight County Schools named Smithfield High School senior Chinazaekpere Agbasi and Windsor High School senior Logan Vance as its seniors of the month for March.
IWCS recognizes a senior of the month from SHS and WHS at each monthly School Board meeting. Both students, who were each recognized at the board’s March 14 meeting, will receive a $500 scholarship made possible through donations from the division’s business partners.
Agbasi, a member of the SHS Junior ROTC program for four years, leads with passion as battalion executive officer. She has taken dual-enrollment and honors-level courses and is active in clubs and student government, including as a mentor for several junior cadets in the ROTC program.
She organized a February blood drive at SHS and as a member of the yearbook staff, takes pictures at school events of students and staff.
“Chinazaekpere is one of the most caring students I have ever had the pleasure of instructing,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Peter Badoian, SHS Junior ROTC instructor. “She cares about her classmates and will put in extra time to go above and beyond what is needed to ensure her team is successful. She has been instrumental in making our annual Blood Drive a success. She is always looking for ways to grow and improve as a student, cadet, and citizen.”
Agbasi has received a congressional nomination to attend a military academy and is waiting on her acceptance from the Naval Academy, where she plans to major in chemistry.
The division describes Vance as a “Renaissance man” whose love of learning has fueled his writing a book series, playing the violin, singing, and drawing. Vance’s interests also include
robotics, woodworking, and bio-engineering.
Vance devotes much of his time outside of the classroom to the care of his younger brother. He picks up and watches his brother every day after school. Despite having this huge responsibility, he has found time to volunteer at the high school’s Fall Festival and Windsor Elementary’s Fall Title 1 Reading Night, serve as Vice-President of WHS’s Beta Club, and is one of the captains of the school’s wrestling team. This past month he competed in wrestling at the regional level, placing fifth in the region.
“Logan is a class act! He is a responsible young man who possesses great skills as a team player. He never complains and is willing to do whatever it takes for him and his teammates to succeed. It has been an honor to know and coach Logan during his time as a Duke,” said Sumner Bradshaw, art teacher and wrestling coach at WHS.
Vance plans on majoring in mechanical engineering at Old Dominion University.
