The small Windsor-based Coastal Point Gymnastics XCEL team, formerly known as Windsor Gymnastics XCEL, has been nothing short of stellar to begin the 2023-24 season.
The proof is in the large collection of medals.
“This season alone, with only three competitions under our belts, our 11 gymnasts have brought home 41 gold, 33 silver and 14 bronze medals,” team community outreach coordinator Alisha Graney said.
She noted that the squad’s tally of 11 competing gymnasts clearly illustrates that the team is still small, but she said it is slowly growing. The girls come from all across Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, Franklin and Suffolk.
The team’s highest-level gymnasts include Josie Griffin and Karli Woody, who compete at the XCEL Platinum level.
Competing at the XCEL Silver level are Holly Cook, Aislinn Graney, Oaklie Jackson and Caroline Slaba.
Coastal Point’s XCEL Bronze team features Sadie Gaskins, Alexis Luckado, Addi McCormick, Joy Menta and Allie Nystrom.
The Coastal Point gymnasts are led by coaches Steve Woody and Hannah Overstreet.
The team’s most recent performance came at the Nashville Nights event from Feb. 2-4 in Nashville, Tennessee.
“This is the first time we have taken the entire team out of state for a competition,” Alisha Graney said. “These young ladies competed against teams from across the entire country, and they did absolutely amazing.”
The overall Coastal Point team earned 12 gold medals, 14 silver and three bronze in Nashville.
Leading the way for the squad was Menta, who placed first in every category at the XCEL Bronze level — vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around.
The Coastal Point XCEL Bronze team placed second in Nashville.
At the Jerrell Steele Invitational that took place in Henrico on Jan. 5-7, the Coastal Point XCEL Bronze squad placed first.
It was powered to that finish by McCormick, who finished with three gold medals and one silver. Luckado earned three golds and one bronze, Gaskins had one gold, three silvers and one bronze, Menta had one gold, one silver and one bronze, and Nystrom earned a gold as well.
For Coastal Point’s XCEL Silver team, Jackson has stood out, earning a trio of gold medals in both the Jerrell Steele Invitational and the Turkey Tumble Invitational on Nov. 17-19.
On Coastal Point’s XCEL Platinum team, Griffin earned four golds and a bronze at the Jerrell Steele event and three golds and a silver at the Turkey Tumble.
Karli Woody represented Coastal Point’s XCEL Platinum team at Nashville Nights and earned a gold and two silvers.
The Coastal Point Gymnastics XCEL team’s next meet will be the Diamond Invitational in Chesapeake on March 22-24.
“As always, our team is looking for support and sponsorships from the local community,” Graney said, alluding to Isle of Wight, Franklin, Southampton and Suffolk. “We have girls who live in Suffolk, Windsor, Ivor, Sedley, Courtland and other local area towns.”
