The Woman’s Club of Windsor recently observed the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ National Day of Service with a dedication of a new “little free pantry.”  GFWC had asked all clubs to help alleviate food insecurities in our communities. The pantry was built by the husband of a club member, and will serve the area for years.

Several club members attended the ceremony which opened with prayer by Rev. Sam Askew of Windsor Christian Church and was followed with remarks by Windsor Mayor George Stubbs.  Bonnie Johnson, chairman of the Civic Engagement CSP explained the planning that went into the project and that her father had a grocery store on the same property many years ago.

The building his store was in has been torn down, however, bricks from his store provided a walkway from the parking lot to the Little Free Pantry.  It was also named Griffin’s Little Free Pantry in his memory. Enough food was donated this morning to fill the pantry.

Churches in a six-mile radius were invited to participate in the ceremony and the club hopes to get support from them and the community in keeping the pantry filled with nonperishable food items for community members in need. The club is encouraging everyone in the area to add nonperishable food items to the pantry when they are able.

The club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Virginia (GFWC Virginia) and Southside District.
