The community of Walters in Carrsville will be the setting for an old fashioned carnival Saturday, Aug. 6, that will be free and open to everyone.

Organizing the first-time event is the Walters Ladies Community Club.

Shawn Carr, president of the club, explained that she and her fellow club members have been thinking about the Old Fashioned Community Carnival for some time now.

“We’re trying to do community service projects, and three years ago, we came up with (this), and because of COVID, we could never finish the planning of it, so we decided this year, when we started our meetings back up, that we were going to work on this, and that’s what we did,” she said. “We just started getting stuff together, and we had two yard sales to raise some money so that we could buy the prizes. I think it’s the first hundred kids (at the carnival that) will get a little goodie bag.”

Carr said everybody is ultimately going to win something when they go to the carnival.

“And we just are trying to do community events to get the community involved and provide a safe environment for different things for the kids to do,” she said, referencing the club.

The carnival will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and it will be held at the Walters Ruritan Community House, which is located at 27746 Walters Highway in Carrsville.

Carr said those who attend the event will find offerings that include carnival games, craft vendors inside the community house, three bounce houses and free hot dogs, sno-cones and popcorn.

Also on hand for displays and demonstrations will be the Virginia State Police, Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department and American K-9 Interdiction.

Parking for the event is going to be off-site, about 500 feet from the community house, Carr explained, and there will be signs that say “Carnival Parking.”

Carr said the goal of the carnival is for people in the area “to meet their neighbors and have fun in a safe environment.”

“Anybody who wants to volunteer and help, show up at 8 o’clock in the morning when we set everything up and come on,” she said.
