More than 100 elementary school and middle school girls participated in Isle of Wight County Schools’ first-ever division-wide Girls on the Run Mermaid 5K June 13 at Windsor High School.

Girls on the Run describes its mission as inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. The nonprofit organization began with 13 girls in 1996 and has grown to include more than 2 million girls nationwide, according to its website.

Isle of Wight is now the first school district nationwide to have students participate in a Girls on the Run event from every public elementary and middle school within the district.

“We are so excited about this partnership, and hope to use it as a model for other school districts in Hampton Roads, and in our nationwide network of Councils,” said Ellen Carver, executive director of Girls on the Run Hampton Roads. “This timing is especially important now, when the social, emotional and physical health of students, in the wake of the pandemic, is paramount.”
