ISLE OF WIGHT

The Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors will petition the Circuit Court to include a special election for Circuit Court Clerk with the November general election.

Isle of Wight Circuit Court Clerk Sharon Jones announced earlier this month that she plans to retire midway through her second eight-year term. Jones had asked that the special election be included with the November general election to save money.

This November is also the presidential election, so turnout is expected to be high.

Jones’ chief deputy, Kathleen Torrence, will automatically become interim circuit court clerk, and she also plans to run for the position. The winner of the November election will serve the remainder of Jones’ term.

The Board also approved a full-time clerk’s position on Thursday to address staffing issues in the office.
