SMITHFIELD
Did you ever know of the amusement park at Buckroe Beach? Coleman Nursery’s winter Wonderland and Frontier City? What about Rice’s Fossil Pit in Hampton?
Those gone and nearly forgotten sites have been remembered and recorded by writer Nancy E. Sheppard in her book, “Lost Attractions of Hampton Roads.”
She’ll speak about her research and writing during a free program at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. This will take place in the Isle of Wight County Museum, 103 Main St., Smithfield. A book signing and sharing of memories will take place afterward.
This is not Sheppard’s first publication. That was “The Airship ROMA Disaster in Hampton Roads” (The History Press, 2016), which earned a nomination for the 2017 Virginia Literary Awards.
The Hampton Roads native earned her bachelor of arts degree in history from the American Military University. She also worked as a staff writer, photojournalist and editor-in-chief for the former Yorktown Crier-Poquoson Post newspaper.
