IWA students take awards at forensics meet

Nineteen Isle of Wight Academy students won awards at the annual Association of Virginia Academies high school forensics meet on Thursday at IWA.

The Academy also won second place in the novice (grades 8-9) and varsity (grades 10-12) sweepstakes competitions, determined by points earned by student winners in individual and duo categories at the seven-school competition.

The individual win total is a 19-percent increase over last year’s win total of 16. Last year, the team won second- and third-place sweepstakes honors.

  • Makayla Donnelly, novice serious oral interpretation
  • Sydney Grimes and Mackenzie Wooten, varsity dual oral interpretation
  • Macy Hooper, novice storytelling
  • Madison Rose Mottley, varsity serious poetry
  • Savannah Ritter, varsity original oratory

Second Place Winners

  • Emma Demsko, novice storytelling (including children’s choice award)
  • Hannah Edwards, novice after-dinner speaking
  • Rett Edwards, varsity extemporaneous speaking
  • Quinn Hooper, varsity storytelling
  • Olivia Lucas, varsity original oratory
  • Hannah McClain, novice sight reading
  • Elizabeth Queen, varsity humorous oral interpretation
  • Alaina Whitley, novice humorous prose

Third Place Winners

  • Blake Atkinson, varsity sight reading
  • Tyler Hayslett, varsity after-dinner speaking
  • Alicia Ray, varsity serious prose
  • Zack Stroud, varsity oral interpretation
