Fuqua Falcons overtakes IWA Chargers in basketball

Fuqua School hit 13 three-pointers in defeating Isle of Wight Academy, 73-49, here on Friday night.
Tanner Thomas led the Falcons with four long-distance shots among his 16 points. Teammate Jalen Hempfield led his team with 17 points; IWA’s Grant Worthy also had 17 points. Russ Wells made the Chargers’ only three-pointer on the night.
Fuqua (3-2) jumped out to an early 20-10 lead on Thomas’ 10 points in the first quarter and continued their dominance, claiming the second period, 24-12, when they hit six three-pointers.
IWA’s (2-2) offense finally get into gear in the fourth quarter, when they outscored Fuqua 18-15.
On Dec. 4, it was IWA who dealt defeat from long range as Worthy had a game-high 19 points when topped local rival Tidewater Academy, 67-38, here Tuesday night.
The Chargers made 9 three-pointers, the most in one game on the young season. Worthy had 19 points for IWA and teammate Hunter Hayden had 12, including a fast-break dunk and two alley-oop layups to spark a 19-6 second quarter.
Amonte Turner had 17 points — including 3 three-pointers — to lead the Tidewater. Teammate Titas Mikalopas had 10.
On Dec. 3, IWA traveled to Williamsburg in a meeting with Walsingham Academy (6-1,) only to fall to the Trojans 63-26. The hosts’ Marcus Banks had 18 points; IWA was led by Russ Wells’ 11 points.
The Chargers returned to action on Monday versus Kenston Forest, Tuesday against Broadwater at Jester Gymnasium, on Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot, and at Williamsburg Christian on Friday. All games begin at 7 p.m.
